For some reason I really missed summer, today was a little cold. I found out about this over this past summer and was hype! I don’t post about sports but as much as I love music, I love sports especially basketball(which is my heart) I have been busy with so many other things, I made an attempt to play Soccer this fall but my schedule was hectic and I couldn’t commit too much, back to Quai 54, first off I thought where is this!? Second thought was I have to go. I have been to street ball/ basketball tournaments before but this is on another level. Watch it.
Soooo it’s Saturday night and I’m chilling watching my favorite movie Sabrina, not the 1954 version but the “95″ version with Harrison Ford(much better in my opinion) flipped through some CD’s I had on my desk and saw this. I bought this CD earlier this year on one of my ’mission trips’ to Baltimore’s famed music/record collector spots and one of the few 100% honest record stores left SoundgardenSoundGarden is like a grocery store for your ears, whatever you have a taste for more than likely they have it. My friends and I go and just dig, nothing in particular on that day but I thought…I need some latin jazz, well I was digging and came up with Boogaloo Pow Wow. I had no idea what it was but first off the Cover is one of the coolest album covers I’ve EVER seen and I would completely wear what the girl in the pic has on, yeah 40 plus years later…still fly. One of the best parts about Soundgarden is that whatever you want to hear they kindly unwrap it, hand it over and you can put into one of their ‘vintage’ CD players and listen. When I heard Boogaloo Pow Wow I instantly wanted to dance off the first track and I didn’t second guess it, I knew I had to buy it. So if you want to have a party on your own on a Wednesday morning going work or anytime you press play…check out Boogaloo Pow Wow, definitely music for the Soul.
The net is a buzz about Jay-Z …well when isn’t the net or anyone not talking about Jay-Z? Although Jay-Z’s book Decoded is set to be released on November 16th (U.S.) to much fanfare; as he has been touring and speaking about the book that he collaborated on with journalist Dream Hampton. Jay-Z was in Miami Beach last month at the famed Delano Hotel and so were the good people at Soulculture but not in the capacity you might think. This ranks high as cool story of the year. I think I would have went into full jumping up and down mode as far as excitement level but keeping with form it was well played by Soulculture.
I think this the first time I have profiled a book here but as a writer it would honestly be bad to say that I don’t read. Well I do and I’m glad that the interweb has enlightened me to some otherwise great reading that I would have never known about. In keeping with the UK; poet, writer and author Gemma Weekes published her first novel “Love me” in early 2009. Somehow through my interweb travels I knew about this book but did not pick it up until recently. I actually had to have it shipped because unfortunately or at least not yet it is not sold here in the states. I am always one to own my books and from all of the reviews I knew I would not go wrong with the purchase. Ms. Weekes pens a book that will capture every bit of your attention. The book is Gen Y/Gen X and speaks to directly to the hip hop generation but has appeal that is completely universal. Set in London and New York City the book takes fiction and makes it seem truly like real life, at times you forget it is fiction and it seems more like you are following around the main character Eden as she goes about her life and tries to figure things out with a complicated present and a past that unfolds throughout the book. Gemma Weekes takes daily life and digs into it’s very core where a dinner seems just as vivid as if you were siting at the table listening to Eden tell her story. Love me is a love story, a life story and a learning experience and Gemma effortlessly takes the reader along for all three. Love me is definitely a page turner and I personally look forward to what the future holds for Gemma Weekes.
This is great news, there was rumblings of Q-tip book and the now scrapped Jay-Z autobiography. But it appears that Questlove will be writing a book entitled, “Mommy what’s a Questlove?”. Honestly I always want to hear what Questlove has to say. Yes more people in hip hop need to write books and articles.
I love everything about this, Take a trip to NYC with BMX rider Nigel Sylvester. All I have to say is “This is cool” oh! those red sneakers are the ish(keeping it clean)
New York is gearing up Rock The Bells today but (clears throat) I’m assuming they saved the best for last. Rock The Bells:DC(Merriweather Post Pavillion, Columbia, MD) is TOMORROW!! Don’t be out of the loop, here are the set times.
Soul Love will be jamming all day, see you all there!
Who doesn’t like Brazil?! I know we do and we’ve never been hehe. Here is a documentary we found about a mashup that has been going on in the Favelas(ghettos) of Brazil called Favela On Blast. We are looking forward to seeing this but now let CNN and the directors/producers tell you about it.
Where Brooklyn at!? ok no we will tone it down, a wonderful new site that taps into everything you want to love about the much touted “That’s why they call it a planet, not a borough or a province…” Check out Soul of Brooklyn!
